Showering every day – According to studies, too much showering can strip away the natural bugs of the skin that the body uses to help fight off infections. It can also rid the body of certain skin oils that keep skin moist. Experts suggest showering every other day, although they do note that you should wash your hands a lot, “and pay attention to the area of the body below the belt.”
Showering for too long – Experts say showers should be quick, and nobody should spend more than 20 minutes in the shower, because water can become an irritant and dry out your skin.
Using soap – Using too much soap can affect immunity, and strips the skin of bacteria that protects us from things like acne or eczema. One expert suggests that water alone is enough to clean the body, except for armpits and groin areas. Plus, as we get older it’s better to use less soap in order to prevent dry and flaky skin.
Letting the shower blast on your face – The heat and pressure from a showerhead can be damaging to the skin on your face and it can rid the face of natural, protective oils.
Using a loofah or pouf – These things are just crawling with bacteria, not only because of all the dead skin we take off with them, but because the damp environment makes it a breading ground for bacteria and mold.
Shampooing with hot water – Tepid water is better for the hair follicles, and hot water can actually make your hair greasy since it activates the sebaceous gland which secretes oil. Also, there’s no real need to scrub your hair, because too much pressure isn’t good.]
Showering in hard water – Hard water means it has high levels of calcium, which can irritate the skin, especially if you have a skin condition like eczema.
Washing your face with a hard cleanser – Harsh cleansers contain chemicals that dry out the skin, which would prevent good bacteria from reforming, and only allow for bad bugs to survive.
Using a razor – Razors left in a shower can collect stubble and mold in areas, and if it gets in contact with the skin it can irritate it. And if the blade becomes dull in the shower it can lead to ingrown hairs and irritations.
