Meaning Behind How Couples Sleep

What does your sleep position reveal about you and your mate?

– A new survey reveals the most popular sleep positions and what they say about a couple’s relationship.

-Twenty-seven percent of people sleep back to back without touching, which shows that they are “connected and secure” in their relationship.

-Other popular positions include backs touching, spooning, lovers knot and superhero.

Have you ever thought about how you and your partner sleep when you’re in bed? Are you cuddlers or do you need to be as far away from each other as possible? Well, believe it or not, how you sleep in bed could say a lot about your relationship, but it’s probably not what you think.

According to a new study, the most common sleep position is what’s called the “liberty” position, which means you and your partner sleep with your backs toward each other without touching. Twenty-seven percent of couples say they sleep this way, and while it may not seem all that romantic, one psychologist thinks it’s actually a good thing. Corine Sweet, who conducted the study, suggests that the liberty position shows that a couple is “connected and secure” in their relationship, and it also reveals “closeness and independence.”

As for other positions:

“Cherish” Position – This is when a couple sleeps with their backs touching each other. Twenty-three percent of respondents say they sleep this way, which Sweet says shows they “are relaxed and comfortable with one another.”

Spooning – Eighteen percent of folks sleep in this cuddly position, which reveals that “one partner takes a protective stance over the other.”

Lover’s Knot – Eight percent of people sleep in this face-to-face position, with their legs and arms intertwined. The position usually lasts only about ten minutes, and it’s “a compromise between intimacy and independence, allowing for the best of both worlds.”

Superhero – Only three percent of people sleep in this somewhat selfish position, with one partner practically pushing the other off the bed. This shows that one partner is clearly “dominant” while the other plays a “secondary role” in the relationship.

The Romantic – While the name may sound perfect, only four percent of people sleep this way, with one partner resting their head on the other’s chest. It is often a sign of being in a new relationship and “’represents vibrant, passionate or rekindled love.”

Pillow Talk – If you are like three percent of couples you may sleep face-to-face without touching. This “shows a need for intimacy and close communication.”

The Lovers – Only two percent sleep in this position, face-to-face with their legs intertwined all night. Sweet says that while it is “romantic and very intimate” it shows “a lack of independence of each other.”
