Todd Mills, who originally had the idea for the Doritos Locos Tacos, died last weekend after never receiving a penny for this invention.

His wife, Ginger, told “USA Today†that her husband wrote to chip company Frito-Lay in 2009 suggesting the idea of using the Dorito as a taco shell. She says the company said, “thanks but no thanks.†Despite the pass, Mills pursued the idea with a Facebook page, the Taco Shells Made from Doritos Movement. Eventually Taco Bell did respond to the page and the rest is history.
Mills was even flown out to the Taco Bell test kitchen to give the invention a whirl. Even though the Bell made over $1-billion from Mills’ idea, he never saw a penny. That didn’t bother the fast food genius, however. Friends say Todd never wanted compensation for his idea and was happy just to be able to have his tacos. In a statement from the fast food heavyweight, Taco Bell calls Mills a “true friend” of the company.
